Reinventing Yourself as an Expat

Moving abroad is a massive transformation that affects every single area of your life.

A lot of times we focus on what is lost - friends, family, neighborhood, social groups, the things we did for work and fun - basically our entire identity.

But instead of focusing on what's lost, it can help tremendously to focus on what can be gained if you let go of your old life and let yourself change and grow.

How can you reinvent yourself after you leave behind your familiar life for your expat adventure?

1. Out with the old

When we cling to old identities that no longer fit, it can cause a lot of pain and frustration. For the first year I lived abroad I had one foot in Shanghai and one still firmly planted in San Francisco. There were quite a few "deep nights of the soul" as I grappled with my shifting identity.

It wasn't until I let go of everything from my old life that I was able to fully step into the person I didn't even know I wanted to become. The biggest inner transformation I experienced was when I went back to California for the summer, let go of my San Francisco apartment, and pared down my belongings to one box that lives in my dad's garage.

Letting go of all that baggage left me feeling light and free. I returned to Shanghai a better version of myself, and it was only then that I was able to dive headfirst into my new life, and give everything I had to my own evolution and growth.

Ask yourself: What am I ready to let go of? What are the external and internal things holding me back from becoming a better version of myself?

2. Embrace the new

If I wasn't going to be tied anymore to my old life and identity, who did I want to become? I spent the next couple years asking myself that question. I tried lots of new things, and tried on lots of ways of being in the world, wanting to show up as authentic and aligned as possible.

At times life was scary and totally overwhelming, but equally rewarding and expanding. I was lucky to find friends and coaches who supported me as I made life-changing transformations.

Ask yourself: Who do I want to become? How do I want to show up in the world?
