Goal Setting Exercises for Expats
Expat life is exciting but chaotic, fun but exhausting. Our own goals and dreams can get buried as we navigate a new culture and way of life.
A year or so after I moved abroad, I was like "hang on, what were my goals again??" I took time to reevaluate where I was and where I wanted to go, and there are several exercises that helped me.
1: What do you want?
Whenever you set goals, you want to do it from a place of abundance, not lack. So before you do this exercise, take a moment to think about what you have now that you used to want. This will help you generate feelings of gratitude and satisfaction.
Then, turn off your phone and all distractions. With focus, write down 25 things that you want. Big or small, long term or short term, objects or feelings. Huge dreams, small tasks, crazy ideas, or secret desires. Just brainstorm everything that comes to mind until you have a list of 25.
2. What is most important?
First, make a list of your top five priorities in order. Then journal about them, answering these questions:
- Why did you put them in this order? Why is your top priority so important to you?
- Are you currently living in alignment with what is most important to you? Think about what you did yesterday. Does it reflect your priorities list?
- Does anything need to change in order to better align with your priorities?
3. What is the goal you will work on first?
Decide on a goal you will work on first. Write it down and set a date for completion. Explain exactly how you will know that you have reached the goal. Then, answer the following questions:
- Why do you want to achieve this goal?
- How do you feel when you imagine reaching this goal?
- How will you need to change to become the person who has realized this goal?
