Expat Self-Care Tips for a Better Life Abroad


Self-care is a buzz word that is thrown around a lot these days. If you search #selfcare on Instagram you will get 12.8 MILLION posts!


A lot of what you see are people taking bubble baths and exercising and eating vegetables, all of which are amazing and important self-care practices.


But I want to go a little further with it. Because it's not just the actions you take, but what is happening in your mind and with your emotions that constitutes truly taking care of yourself.


As expats, it is even more important to have a strong relationship with yourself and to take care of yourself in a compassionate and supportive way. Here are some ways to deepen your relationship with yourself:


1. How do you feel about you?


Here's the truth: You're stuck with yourself for the rest of your life. Ask yourself:


- Is this a good thought or a scary thought?

- Do you like to hang out with yourself?

- Are you nice and compassionate to yourself?

- How much attention do you give yourself?


Your answers to these questions will reveal areas that you can work on to better your relationship with yourself.



2. What do you love about you?


Write down the things you like and appreciate about yourself. These are not affirmations or things you don't believe in to try to convince yourself that you're something you're not.


Look for things you really do like about yourself. You want to understand and celebrate who you truly are.


I'll share a few of mine with you:

- I love that I have an adventurous spirit and take risks

- I love that I am a lifelong learner

- I love that I embrace growth and change


3. How can you take care of you?


As Brooke Castillo, my coach and mentor, says, "Talk to yourself in a wonderful way, find out what you love to do, and then do it. Be great company for yourself so when other people come, it just adds to the party."


When you feel good about yourself and have your own back, THEN it's time for action. What do you want to do to take care of yourself?


It might be:

- Saying no

- Speaking kindly to yourself

- Allowing yourself to feel any emotion

- Forgiving yourself and others

- Becoming the best version of yourself
